How to Add a WhatsApp Button to WordPress (Free Plugin)
A WhatsApp button lets visitors message you in one tap instead of filling in a form and waiting for an email. For many small businesses, especially those whose customers already live in WhatsApp, it is the fastest way to turn a website visit into a conversation.
There are two simple ways to add a WhatsApp button to WordPress: a plugin that adds a floating button to every page, or a plain link you place yourself. This guide covers both, plus the number format that trips most people up.
Option 1: A Free Floating Button Plugin (No Code)
A floating button stays in the corner of every page, so visitors can reach you wherever they are. Our free plugin, MatrixInn Floating Buttons, is on WordPress.org and adds WhatsApp, Call, Email and Scroll to Top buttons. Each one can be turned on or off on its own.
Step 1: Install the plugin
In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New, search for MatrixInn Floating Buttons, then click Install Now and Activate. You can also download it from its WordPress.org page.
Step 2: Turn on the WhatsApp button and add your number
Open the plugin's settings, enable the WhatsApp button, and enter your number in international format (see the next section). Add a pre-filled message if you want, such as "Hi, I have a question about your services." It appears in the visitor's chat box so they only have to press send.
Step 3: Adjust the look
Choose the left or right side of the screen, one of three sizes, and a background color for each button. You can add tooltip text that shows on hover, delay the buttons by up to 10 seconds so they do not compete with your hero section, and show them on desktop, mobile or both. A common setup is WhatsApp everywhere and the Call button on mobile only.
Step 4: Save and test
Save, open your site on your phone, and tap the button. WhatsApp should open with your number and message ready. On a desktop it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
The plugin needs WordPress 5.8 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer, and it removes all of its settings if you delete it.
The WhatsApp Number Format That Works
Use your full international number with the country code first, digits only: no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes, and no leading zero before the local number.
| Country | Local number | Enter |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan | 0300 1234567 | 923001234567 |
| UAE | 050 123 4567 | 971501234567 |
| United Kingdom | 07911 123456 | 447911123456 |
| United States | (202) 555-1234 | 12025551234 |
| India | 98765 43210 | 919876543210 |
If tapping the button opens WhatsApp but says the number is not on WhatsApp, the format is almost always the reason.
Option 2: A Simple wa.me Link
If you only want a WhatsApp link in one place, such as a contact page or a button in your header, you do not need a plugin. WhatsApp's click-to-chat links look like this:
https://wa.me/923001234567?text=Hi%2C%20I%20have%20a%20question
Replace the number with yours and the text after ?text= with your message, URL-encoded (spaces become %20). In the block editor, add a Button block and paste the link. The difference from the plugin is that the link only appears where you place it, and it does not float on every page.
Tips for a WhatsApp Button That Gets Used
- Set expectations. Add your reply hours to the pre-filled message or near the button.
- Answer quickly. A WhatsApp button promises a fast reply; WhatsApp Business lets you set a greeting and away message.
- Do not stack too many buttons. One or two floating buttons are clear; five are noise.
- Check it on a real phone after every theme change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MatrixInn Floating Buttons plugin free?

Do I need WhatsApp Business?
No. The button works with any WhatsApp number. WhatsApp Business adds features such as greeting messages and labels, which help if you get many chats.
Will a WhatsApp button slow down my site?
